Murals, Public Art and Interiors in Okotoks

Site-specific murals, public art and artist-led interiors for the town on the Sheep River, under an hour south of our Calgary studio.

Okotoks sits on the Sheep River, a short drive south of Calgary. KINN Studios is an artist-led experiential design studio based in Calgary, under an hour north, and we design murals, public art, installations, activations and interiors for Okotoks businesses, property owners and public spaces.

Our community murals in Calgary, Vibrance in Diversity in the northeast and SAWA in the northwest, show how we handle a public brief: we listen first, design for the specific site, and plan the painting days around the people who use the space. Vibrance in Diversity runs 100 metres and was made with Treaty 7 artist Kristy North-Peigan, with residents joining on community painting days. SAWA was co-created with artist Maya Corona.

An exterior wall south of Calgary faces strong sun, dry air and freeze-thaw cycles. We choose paints and protective coatings for those conditions, so a wall painted in one summer still reads clearly years later, whether it belongs to a shop downtown or a new commercial building.

Working with the Town, businesses and developers in Okotoks

In Okotoks, a project might start with a Town public art call, a business owner downtown or a developer with a new commercial building. A public call has a fixed brief, a fixed fee and a selection process, and we respond the way the Town asks: a clear concept, a realistic schedule and a materials plan.

Exterior murals on private property may need a development permit under the Town of Okotoks Land Use Bylaw, particularly if the work could be read as signage. Interior murals typically do not. We confirm what applies and prepare the application with the owner.

Okotoks is under an hour from our studio, so a site visit, a mockup and the installation can be grouped into a small number of trips. Travel is listed separately in the proposal.

You may find our guide to responding to a public art call and our mural pricing guide useful before we talk. Services shows everything we design, and about the studio explains how we work.

FAQ

Questions about working in Okotoks

Do you travel to Okotoks?

Yes. Okotoks is under an hour south of our Calgary studio, and we plan site visits, mockups and installation into as few trips as the project allows.

Can you respond to a Town of Okotoks public art call?

Yes. We read each call closely, confirm eligibility and site conditions, and prepare the concept, budget and schedule the Town asks for. When a call sets a fixed installation date, we plan the work backwards from it.

Do you handle permits in Okotoks?

Yes. We research whether a development permit applies under the Town of Okotoks Land Use Bylaw, prepare the drawings and submit with the property owner. Interior murals typically do not require a permit.
