Site-specific artwork and artist-led interiors for a foothills town on the Bow River, from its historic main street to its newer neighbourhoods.
Cochrane sits in the foothills on the Bow River, west of Calgary on Highway 1A, and it holds two kinds of place side by side. Its historic downtown is a walkable main street of independent shops and cafes, and around it are newer neighbourhoods and commercial buildings. KINN Studios is an artist-led experiential design studio based in Calgary, under an hour away, and we design murals, installations, activations and interiors for both.
Each setting asks for something different. On the main street, a mural sits among older buildings and neighbouring shopfronts, so its scale, colour and lettering have to respect the block. In a new commercial building the walls are a blank start, and the question is how the artwork, the finishes and the signage work as one.
Our restaurant murals in Calgary, Pekko in Kensington and Uprooted at UNA Pizza + Wine in Bridgeland, show how we approach a small restaurant or shop, and the process here is the same: a site visit, a concept drawn for the wall, and a fixed proposal before anything is painted.
Interior murals for cafes, restaurants and shops on the historic main street, and exterior walls where the Town’s land use rules and the character of the street allow.
Responses to Town of Cochrane public art calls and developer commissions, from concept through fabrication drawings and installation.
Artist-led interior design for restaurants, boutiques, studios and clinics, with renderings, material selection and coordination through buildout.
Temporary builds for festivals, markets and retail launches, designed to travel from Calgary and to stand up to outdoor weather.
Set design and spatial planning for weddings, community events and private celebrations, indoors or outdoors against the foothills.
In Cochrane, a project might start with a main street business owner, a developer with a new commercial or mixed-use building, or a Town public art call. We walk the site with whoever approves the work, photograph the wall in daylight and agree the scope before any design begins.
Exterior murals in Cochrane may need a development permit under the Town of Cochrane Land Use Bylaw, depending on the site and whether the work is treated as a sign. Interior murals typically do not. We confirm what applies and prepare the application with the property owner.
Cochrane is under an hour from our studio. We combine the site visit, mockups and installation into as few trips as the work allows, and list travel separately in the proposal.
To get a sense of costs, read our mural pricing guide or interior design cost guide. Services covers everything we design, and about the studio explains how we work.
Restaurant and community murals from Calgary, similar in scale to the shops and cafes of a main street.
Yes. Cochrane is under an hour west of our Calgary studio on Highway 1A, and we plan site visits and installation into a small number of trips.
Interior murals usually need four to eight weeks from approval to completion, and interior design projects run eight to sixteen weeks from concept to buildout. Exterior murals are best planned over the winter for painting between May and October.
Yes. We research what the Town of Cochrane Land Use Bylaw requires for the site, prepare the drawings and submit with the property owner. Interior murals typically do not require a permit.
