Site-specific murals and artist-led interiors for the cafes, boutiques and restaurants of Kensington Village, including our mural series for Pekko.
Kensington is a walking neighbourhood of cafes, boutiques, bookshops and restaurants on the north side of the Bow River. Its storefronts are small, its sidewalks are busy, and its businesses compete on character. KINN Studios is an artist-led experiential design studio based in Calgary, and we design murals, installations, activations and interiors for the businesses and property owners of Kensington.
Our built work in the neighbourhood is Pekko, a two-part mural series completed in 2025 for a retro-inspired burger restaurant. The exterior and interior pieces remix mid-century graphics with wavy forms, checkerboard fields and halftone textures so the design carries from the street into the dining room.
That project reflects how we work in Kensington: one design idea, carried across surfaces, sized for a small footprint and a lot of foot traffic. The Kensington BIA, the landlords along Kensington Road and 10th Street NW, and the owner-operators who lease from them all have a stake in how a storefront looks, and we design with each of them in mind.
Interior and exterior murals for cafes, restaurants and shops, designed as one composition from storefront to back wall so the business reads clearly from the sidewalk.
Window pieces, ceiling installations and small freestanding works that give a compact space a focal point without taking up floor area.
Temporary builds for launches, patio seasons and Kensington BIA event weekends, designed to install and remove quickly on a busy street.
Artist-led interior design for cafes, boutiques and restaurants, with concept renderings, material selection and coordination through buildout. Small spaces get the same attention as large ones.
Set design and spatial planning for launches, tastings and private events in Kensington venues.
Kensington briefs usually come from an owner-operator opening or refreshing a cafe, restaurant or boutique, or from a landlord or the Kensington BIA looking at a side wall. The conversation often starts with a single wall and grows into the storefront and interior once the idea is clear. We are happy to start small and build from there.
Exterior murals visible from public space in Calgary may require a development permit under the Land Use Bylaw. Interior murals typically do not. We research what applies to the specific building and prepare the application for the owner.
Budgets range from a single interior feature wall to a combined exterior and interior series like Pekko. We give a range at the first conversation and a fixed proposal after the site visit.
If you would like a sense of the numbers before we talk, our mural pricing guide and interior design cost guide are a good starting point. To see the full range of what we do, visit Services or read about the studio.
