Site-specific artwork and artist-led interiors for the hotels, resorts, restaurants and public spaces of the Bow Valley, an hour west of our Calgary studio.
Canmore and Banff receive millions of visitors a year, and the hotels, resorts, restaurants and shops that serve them compete on atmosphere. Canmore has a public art program run by the Town and a community arts centre, artsPlace, that exhibits and commissions work. KINN Studios is an artist-led experiential design studio based in Calgary, about an hour from Canmore and ninety minutes from Banff, and we design murals, installations, activations and interiors for the Bow Valley.
In May 2021 we exhibited Love for Humanity at artsPlace Canmore, a large-scale mural of roughly six by two and a half metres painted on the gallery wall. The piece honours the resilience of farmers during the global farmers’ protest and reflects our Punjabi-Canadian identity. It remains one of the works we are proudest of.
For hotel and resort interiors, our approach is the same as in the city: study the building, its guests and its views, then design artwork and interiors that belong to the place rather than to a trend.
Interior murals for hotel lobbies, restaurants, cafes and retail, and exterior murals where the Town of Canmore or Town of Banff design guidelines allow. Designed for mountain light and for guests who photograph everything.
Suspended, freestanding and wall-mounted installations for hotel and resort lobbies, corridors and outdoor spaces, with fabrication drawings and installation coordination.
Temporary builds for brand events, festivals and seasonal moments in Canmore and Banff, designed for transport from Calgary and mountain weather.
Artist-led interior design for hotels, resorts, restaurants, spas and boutiques, with concept renderings, material selection and coordination through buildout.
Set design and spatial planning for weddings, launches and private events in Bow Valley venues.
Bow Valley briefs usually come from hotel and resort operators, restaurant owners, developers with a new mixed-use building in Canmore, or the Town of Canmore and artsPlace through their public art and exhibition programs. Hospitality projects often need to work around occupancy, so we plan installation for shoulder seasons and quiet days.
Banff sits inside a national park, and exterior work there follows Town of Banff design guidelines and Parks Canada requirements. Canmore has its own design guidelines and land use bylaw. Interior murals typically do not need a permit in either town. We research what applies to the property and prepare the application with the owner.
For budgets, travel is modest because the drive is short, but multi-day painting may involve accommodation. We state both separately in the proposal.
If you would like a sense of the numbers before we talk, our mural pricing guide and interior design cost guide are a good starting point. To see the full range of what we do, visit Services or read about the studio.
Our work in the Bow Valley is Love for Humanity at artsPlace Canmore. Here it is alongside related hospitality and interior work from Calgary.
Yes. Canmore is about an hour from our Calgary studio and Banff about ninety minutes. We exhibited Love for Humanity at artsPlace Canmore in 2021, and we plan site visits and installation around hotel occupancy and mountain weather.
Interior murals and installations usually need six to ten weeks from approval to completion. Hotel and resort interiors run eight to sixteen weeks from concept to buildout, often timed to a shoulder season. Exterior murals should be planned over the winter for painting between June and September.
Yes. We research the Town of Canmore or Town of Banff requirements, including Parks Canada considerations in Banff, prepare the drawings and submit with the property owner. Interior murals typically do not require a permit.
