Site-specific artwork and artist-led interiors for the retail, wellness and restaurant businesses of Marda Loop, home of Marda Gras.
Marda Loop has grown into one of the busiest neighbourhood high streets in Calgary, with cafes, boutiques, clinics, fitness studios and restaurants along 33rd and 34th Avenue SW, and a summer street festival, Marda Gras, that fills the avenue. KINN Studios is an artist-led experiential design studio based in Calgary, and we design murals, installations, activations and interiors for the businesses and property owners here.
Marda Loop is a neighbourhood of owner-operators. Briefs tend to be practical: a feature wall that gives a cafe an identity, an interior that makes a clinic feel calm, a storefront that reads clearly from a car. We take those briefs seriously and design work that does its job well.
Our closest project is Viva Frida, a 2020 mural for an ice cream shop in Killarney, a few minutes away, and our beauty and wellness interiors in NE Calgary show how we approach the clinics and studios common on this street.
Interior feature walls for cafes, clinics, salons and studios, and exterior murals on side walls and along the avenue. Designed for the wall and for the way customers see it.
Window pieces, ceiling installations and small freestanding works that give a compact retail space a focal point.
Temporary builds for Marda Gras, launches and patio seasons, designed to install and remove cleanly on a busy avenue.
Artist-led interior design for salons, med spas, clinics, cafes and boutiques, with concept renderings, material selection and coordination through buildout.
Set design and spatial planning for launches, open houses and private events in Marda Loop venues.
Marda Loop briefs usually come from an owner-operator, a landlord with a new-build ground floor, or the Marda Loop BIA. Many of the newer buildings have large ground-floor glazing and long side walls, which suit both interior murals visible from the street and exterior work.
Exterior murals visible from public space in Calgary may require a development permit under the Land Use Bylaw. Interior murals typically do not. We research what applies to the building and prepare the application for the owner.
Budgets range from a single interior feature wall to a full interior design with custom millwork. We give a range at the first conversation and a fixed proposal after the site visit.
If you would like a sense of the numbers before we talk, our mural pricing guide and interior design cost guide are a good starting point. To see the full range of what we do, visit Services or read about the studio.
Work from other Calgary neighbourhoods: a wellness interior, a brow bar mural and a restaurant mural series.
Yes. KINN Studios is based in Calgary and Marda Loop is a short drive from our studio. We can attend site visits, BIA meetings and installation in person.
Interior murals usually need four to eight weeks from approval to completion. Interior design projects run eight to sixteen weeks from concept to buildout. Exterior murals should be planned over the winter for painting between May and October.
Yes. We research whether a development permit applies, prepare the drawings and submit on behalf of the property owner. Interior murals in Calgary typically do not require a permit.
