Site-specific murals and designed spaces for the densest neighbourhood in Calgary, home to the BUMP Festival and some of the best restaurants in the city.
The Beltline is the neighbourhood in Calgary where murals are most expected. It is the home of the BUMP Festival, and its walls, laneways and restaurant interiors already carry more painted work than anywhere else in the city. KINN Studios is an artist-led experiential design studio based in Calgary, a few minutes from the Beltline, and we design murals, installations, activations and interiors for the businesses and property owners who work here.
Because the neighbourhood is so visually busy, we think carefully about restraint. A new mural in the Beltline needs to hold its own without shouting over its neighbours. Our approach is to study the block, the building and the interior, then design something that reads as part of that place.
Interior murals for restaurants, bars and cafes, and exterior murals on the side walls and laneways that the Beltline BIA and property owners want to bring to life. Designed for the specific wall, not adapted from a template.
Freestanding and suspended pieces for mixed-use lobbies, patios and courtyards. We provide fabrication drawings and coordinate with building operators on installation.
Temporary builds for launches, patios, festival periods and vacant storefronts. We design, build and install, and we plan for take-down from the start.
Artist-led interior design for restaurants, bars, boutiques and studios, with concept renderings, material selection and coordination through buildout.
Set design and spatial planning for launches, dinners and private events in Beltline venues, designed around how guests arrive, gather and move.
Beltline briefs usually come from restaurant and bar owners, developers with a new mixed-use building, or the Beltline BIA planning streetscape improvements. Each of these has a different timeline and a different set of approvals, and we adjust the process to match.
Exterior murals visible from public space in Calgary may require a development permit under the Land Use Bylaw. Some Beltline buildings also carry heritage considerations, and any work on a public right of way needs its own approval. We check what applies to each wall before we design, and we prepare the paperwork.
For budgets, a restaurant interior mural sits at the accessible end, and a full building side wall or a multi-week activation at the other. We give a range at the first conversation and a fixed proposal after visiting the site.
If you would like a sense of the numbers before we talk, our mural pricing guide and interior design cost guide are a good starting point. To see the full range of what we do, visit Services or read about the studio.
Restaurant and community work from across Calgary.
Yes. KINN Studios is based in Calgary and the Beltline is a short drive from our studio, so site visits for measurements, mockups and installation are easy to arrange.
Interior murals typically need four to eight weeks from approval to completion. Exterior murals should be planned over the winter for painting between May and October, and permit timelines can add several weeks. Activations tied to an event date should start at least eight weeks out.
Yes. We research whether a development permit applies, prepare the drawings and submit on behalf of the property owner. Interior murals in Calgary typically do not require a permit.
