If you manage a building, a retail space or a hospitality venue in Calgary, you have probably asked this question and found no clear answer. Prices for custom art installations are rarely published, partly because every piece is different and partly because the word "installation" covers everything from a painted lobby wall to a suspended sculpture in a three-storey atrium. This guide gives you the typical Calgary price bands we see, explains what moves the number, and shows what a proper quote should include so you can compare like with like.

One note before the numbers. These are broad, typical Calgary ranges drawn from our own quoting and from what we see across the local market. They are a planning tool, not a price list. A site visit is what turns a range into a figure.

Calgary Art Installation Pricing at a Glance

The table below groups installations by the kind of space they live in and the kind of work they involve. Every figure includes design, materials and installation unless noted.

Installation Type Typical Calgary Range
Painted lobby or reception feature wall (100 to 300 sq ft) $5,000 - $15,000
Retail feature installation (wall relief, painted panels, custom fixture art) $6,000 - $25,000
Seasonal or temporary retail installation (6 to 12 weeks on site) $8,000 - $30,000
Suspended atrium installation (engineered, multi-storey) $20,000 - $60,000+
Permanent sculptural or public art commission $25,000 - $250,000+

These bands overlap on purpose. A retail installation made of painted plywood panels and a retail installation made of folded steel are both "retail installations" and they cost very different amounts. If you want the painted end of the spectrum in more detail, our Calgary mural pricing guide breaks down the per-square-foot numbers.

Lobby and Reception Installations

Lobbies are the most common commission we quote for commercial buildings and offices. The wall is usually large, flat and already lit, which keeps the installation simple. What varies is the medium.

A painted feature wall is the most direct route. Design time, surface preparation and painting for a 150 to 300 square foot wall typically comes in between $5,000 and $15,000 in Calgary. The design phase is what separates an installation from a decorative paint job: we look at how people arrive, where they wait, what the building is made of and what the tenant or owner wants the space to say. That thinking is included in the price and it is where most of the value sits. Our post on why Calgary offices are choosing murals over art prints covers the reasoning from the tenant's side.

A dimensional lobby piece, such as a layered wood relief, a sculptural wall of painted panels or an integrated lighting element, moves the range up. Fabrication, mounting hardware and a longer installation window add cost, and most building managers will ask for an engineer's letter for anything heavy that fixes to a wall. Expect $12,000 to $35,000 for this kind of work.

Atrium and Suspended Installations

An atrium changes the conversation entirely. The piece is seen from several floors, from above and below, and it hangs over people. That means engineering is not optional. A suspended installation in Calgary usually involves a structural review of the attachment points, a rigging plan, a certified installation crew and, in most buildings, coordination with property management around lift access and after-hours work.

For a suspended piece in a two or three-storey atrium, the typical Calgary range is $20,000 to $60,000, and it can go higher when the piece is large, kinetic or lit. Materials matter here too. Fabric, paper and lightweight composite pieces are cheaper to make and to hang than metal or timber. If the building is new, ask whether the base building already has rigging points; if it does not, adding them is a cost that sits with the owner, not the artwork.

This is also where an architecture-trained studio earns its fee. Understanding load paths, sightlines and how a piece reads at different heights is exactly the kind of thinking we bring from our experiential architecture practice, and it prevents the expensive surprise of a piece that cannot be hung as designed.

Retail and Restaurant Installations

Retail work sits between the two. Retail installations tend to be smaller and more detailed than lobby work, and they carry a brand. A painted feature wall in a restaurant or shop, sized 100 to 250 square feet, usually costs $5,000 to $12,000. A restaurant mural is usually painted on site around the build schedule, which is normal for retail: the artwork has to fit between the trades.

Fabricated retail installations, such as a custom artboard, a sculptural fixture or an integrated display, typically run $6,000 to $25,000 depending on materials and whether the piece is freestanding. The UNA Pizza artboard on 17th Avenue, installed in June 2026, is an example of a smaller fabricated piece designed to live at street level and be photographed. Our custom retail fixtures post covers the fabrication side in more depth.

Seasonal and temporary retail installations, the kind a shopping centre commissions for a six to twelve week window, are priced on a different logic. The piece has to be built to be removed, stored or discarded, so the fabrication is lighter and the installation and strike are both quoted. Typical Calgary budgets are $8,000 to $30,000. See our post on window display design in Calgary for the storefront end of this.

The material is rarely the biggest line. Design, engineering and access are.

What Moves the Number

When two quotes for the same wall come back $15,000 apart, one of these is usually the reason.

What a Proper Quote Should Include

Ask for the quote to be itemised. At minimum, it should show design and concept development with the number of revision rounds, drawings sufficient for approval and fabrication, materials and fabrication, engineering where relevant, installation labour and access equipment, and any protective finishes. Permits, base-building modifications and structural repairs are normally excluded and should be listed as such.

If a quote is a single line with a single number, ask for the breakdown before comparing it with anything else. A lower figure that leaves out engineering or installation is not a lower price. It is an incomplete one. For interior projects where the installation is part of a wider refit, our interior design cost guide shows how the artwork line fits into the whole.

Getting a Number for Your Space

The fastest route to a real figure is a short site visit. We measure, look at the surface and the structure, check access and lighting, and talk through what the space is for and who moves through it. From that we can give you a scoped range within a few days and a full proposal with concept sketches after that. Our art installations page explains the process, and projects like Vibrance in Diversity, a 100-metre community mural in NE Calgary, and the UNA Pizza artboard on 17th Avenue give a sense of the range of scale we work at. If you are commissioning at the public art end, our placemaking in Calgary post looks at how installations shape a neighbourhood over time.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does a custom art installation cost in Calgary?

Most custom art installations in Calgary land between $5,000 and $60,000. A painted lobby feature wall sits at the lower end, a suspended atrium piece or a fabricated sculptural installation sits at the upper end, and permanent public art commissions can go well beyond that. The number depends on size, materials, engineering, access and how much design time the piece needs.

Does an art installation quote include engineering and installation?

It should say clearly either way. Suspended and freestanding pieces usually need an engineer's review and a proper installation crew. At KINN we itemise design, fabrication, engineering, installation and any lift or access equipment so you can see exactly what you are paying for and compare quotes on the same scope.

How long does a custom art installation take from brief to install?

A painted installation can be complete in four to eight weeks. A fabricated or suspended piece usually needs ten to sixteen weeks once you allow for concept, engineering review, fabrication lead times and building access. If your piece needs to be in place for a specific opening date, brief the studio at least four months ahead.

If you are weighing an installation for a lobby, atrium or retail space and want a realistic number before you commit, tell us about the space. We will walk it with you and give you a scoped range you can plan around.
