Experiential architecture is the practice of designing built environments where the architecture itself becomes the experience. It is not about decorating a space — it is about shaping how people move through it, what they feel at each threshold, and what stays with them after they leave. At KINN Studios, this practice is rooted in founder Kiran Rai-Bhullar’s Master of Architecture training at the University of Calgary. As Calgary’s only architecture-trained experiential design studio, this practice is what defines us.
Our experiential architecture work spans set and scenic design for events and activations, spatial storytelling for brands and cultural institutions, festival architecture, and temporary built environments that deliver permanent impressions. We use 3D modelling, material research, and architectural documentation to ensure every project is not only visually compelling but structurally sound and buildable.
Based in Calgary and working across Canada, KINN Studios occupies a rare niche at the intersection of architecture, art, and experience. We bring the rigour of architectural practice — site analysis, material specification, construction documentation — to creative projects that most architects would never touch, and creative ambition to architectural projects that most designers cannot deliver.
Set and scenic design for launches and events
Set design is architecture with a deadline. The structure has to be designed, built, installed and struck in days, and it has to photograph well from every angle in between.
For a product launch or brand event in Calgary, we design the set as a piece of temporary architecture: structure, sightlines, lighting and finish, drawn and built to be experienced in person and on camera.

Interior design focuses on furnishing and finishing existing spaces. Experiential architecture designs the spatial experience itself — structure, volume, movement, light, material — often creating entirely new environments or transforming existing ones at an architectural scale.
Does KINN Studios do set design for events?
Yes. Set and scenic design is one of our core experiential architecture services. We designed the immersive setting for Ma Chérie, a bridal shower at Venue 308 in Calgary, and we design sets for launches, brand events and cultural activations across Calgary and Western Canada.
Can KINN Studios design temporary structures?
Absolutely. We specialize in designed-to-disassemble architecture for festivals, exhibitions, and seasonal activations. These structures are engineered for both visual impact and efficient installation/removal.
What is placemaking and how does KINN Studios approach it?
Placemaking is the design of public spaces that give communities identity and purpose. We approach placemaking with an architecture-first methodology, combining spatial design with public art and community engagement to create places that people want to gather in.
